today’s journal page:
there is a figure behind all of that mess and chaos. well it’s not mess and chaos exactly. it’s a lot of really amazing ideas and possibilities and opportunities swirling around me. but i can only do one thing at a time. i feel like i wish i could cram all of this into a funnel so each brilliant idea would flow out one at a time. then i could explore them one at a time, really explore what the potential of each one is and how i’d like to bring it into my life and my work, and then move on to the next one. but i am so crowded by ideas i have no space for that.
this page feels really unfinished and bare and it feels exactly like where i’m at today. it’s not pretty, but i sure love it.
it’s telling me to go be outside, today isn’t the day for sorting any of this out.
i really love the way my journal can take my confusion and reflect it back to me in a way that makes things clearer.

this week’s creative journaling exercise is about transformation. i made a video of me making this page and talking about the process of this creative journaling exercise and the idea of transformation:
transformation creative journaling steps:
- create an image of transformation, or yourself ready to transform – anything that expresses a feeling of transformation for you
- journal around the image about how transformation feels, or write the word transformation and see what comes to mind
- on the other side of the page write what you are willing to transform, and what you are willing to transform it into.
- feel the transformation
this is the magic of creative journaling. when you take the time to get into the feeling of it by drawing it and playing with it on the page and then when you do your journaling with it you are so in the zone and so able to get into that feeling of transformation. you are really in a space to be able to let go of the things that no longer serve you and allow the transformation to occur.
i would love to hear what you are willing to transform.

boo!
last night i dressed up and handed out playdoh to the kids trick-or-treating. i loved that there were little pots of playdoh available along with all of the hallween candy at the grocery store and was excited to hand out art supplies instead of candies. but once it was home i wondered if the kids would really apreciate the creative opportunity of playdoh or would they rather have another chocolate bar? early in the evening, there was a group of about 7 kids. the first boy came up and i put the little pot of playdoh in his bag and he screamed
“we’re getting play doh!!!!!!”
i was glad to see that kids still appreciate creative opportunities.
then i went to a fantastic halloween shadow party.
after some merriment and play, we got down to business. we created a circle and invited in all of our deceased loved ones. for each one, we would light a candle and talk about the person as we invited them in to the circle. we told the stories of their lives and their deaths and what they meant to us. this went on for hours as we kept finding more and more spirits wanting to join our circle. i loved the large and beautiful gathering of flickering flames in the center of the circle by the end. it was a really beautiful experience to re-connect with loved ones who have been gone for a long time and to hear everyone else’s stories about people they have lost. some of the stories were sad and some were sweet.
then we revealed the meaning of our costumes, as each of us had dressed up as an aspect of our shadow but most of us could not interpret each other’s costumes. this led to some amazing conversations and realisations about the parts of us we keep hidden and the parts we reveal to the world.
lately i have been cocooning. spending lots of time alone creating and relaxing and enjoying being in my own company. and as much as i love cocooning, it is also so beautiful and important to get out and connect with kindred spirits. i am hugely grateful for the community of amazing people who surround me and for all of the ways that we create beautiful experiences together.

yesterday, as a part of staff wellness month, i gave 2 talks/demonstrations at the health sciences centre in winnipeg. i think it’s fantastic that the staff has this opportunity to explore different wellness modalities and i really enjoyed sharing my work and ideas with some new people. showing creative journaling to someone who hasn’t really seen it before is such an incredible treat for me. it’s like opening up a trap door and showing someone all of this magic and possibility and fun and inviting them to play along.
sharing my work and ideas with new people also helps me to see it in a new perspective. looking at where i’m at, i noticed two things yesterday. first, i went to these presentations with an intention to share what i love about creativity as a tool for wellness and answer any questions they had. back when i first started giving my workshops, going in without a plan written down would have been too scary. it’s great to see how i have grown in that way. i know i would rather hear someone be present and speak from their heart, than read from a piece of paper.
second, i found it really interesting to notice how i am very specific about the words i use in describing what i do. basically i am avoiding a key word – spirituality. at the heart of all of the creativity workshops i do and even at the heart of all of the art i do is my belief that spirituality and creativity are one. in a broader sense my whole life is linked to spirituality but nothing else is a completely and irrevocably tied to spirituality the way creativity is for me.
interesting to notice that i never say that then.
mostly, i do not want anyone to feel like i am telling them what to believe. or that to get any value out of my workshops, you have to believe what i do. for me, life is wide open. each of us is free to believe what feels true for us. i fully respect that and really cherish our differences and uniqueness.
on the flip side of that, last night i started teaching a new class at the centre for conscious living – discovery class. that was a really fantastic experience too but i found that teaching spirituality without the creativity component felt a little bit like something was missing. for me, i cannot separate the two. i know others have something that feels that strongly tied to spirituality for them – maybe being in service, or love, or sex, or nature, or music, anything. if we believe that spirit is everything then maybe whatever we are personally the most drawn to will be where spirit shows up the most strongly for us.
i’d love to hear what you think.

i finished my art journal page for lift your spirits. i made my list of happy-making things and then on the other page i looked at the idea of why don’t you lift your spirits and wrote out what came to mind for me there.
this exercise turned into an excellent reminder on how when i give myself the space to just be, instead of having to do, the things that need to get done do get done. and they get done easier, better and faster because i am in the flow.
there is nothing more important than feeling good and being in the flow. so many amazing inspirations, ideas and opportunities open up when we are in that space. being happy and in the flow is being open to receive from the infinite possibility that surrounds us in every moment.
i love how my creativity can remind me of that and get me back into that space when i fall out of it.
also – the sweet and sassy laurie of ambrosia living won one of the creativity kits given away on monday from creative every day, and i just love what she wrote about it on her blog.

yesterday my sister and i drove out to a small mennonite town to visit my grandma on her birthday. when we arrived, we parked next to this truck:

and we really wished we’d brought our cameras to get a really good photo of the truck. i remembered i had my laptop with me, so i took this photo. but it’s not clear enough to get a real sense of this truck – what was really fabulous is the image of deer in the rear window. i guess i am assuming that the truck owner is a deer hunter, and as an animal loving vegetarian this is foreign and photo-worthy to me.
but even more fabulous was when we were leaving. i was with my grandma, carrying a GINORMOUS squash that my grandma had bought for my sister. really hilariously large and so heavy that i was having a hard time carrying it along with my bag. at the same time, the man from this truck was returning to his truck. he looked at me struggling to open up my car door (i drive a beetle) and hold the giant squash and he laughed and asked “are you going to be able to fit that in there?”
we both laughed so hard. my vehicle is as strange and funny to him as his is to me.
people are awesome.
